We recently attended the Yorkshire Local Council Association Conference in York and several Parish and Town Councils were interested in our web communication system. However, one common theme was Clerks weren’t sure where to start when developing content and found the whole concept intimidating.
Therefore, we thought we would put together some of our hints and tips as to how to go about updating or starting from scratch – it’s not as scary as it seems!
Put yourself in your community’s shoes (and remember you are a member of said community). Quite simply, think about what you want them to know about what is going on in the local community and if you’re not sure ask them.
How many pages? There is no need to go over the top with the number of pages you are putting on the website. Remember to keep it relevant and useful and that will guide you.
Clear, fast and visually appealing content. Keep content short and sweet and don’t be afraid to use different types of content. Interactive content such as blogs and videos can make a site come to life but also it makes a site up to date and relevant.
Sometimes it can be overwhelming to start developing a website but it should be as easy as writing a Word document. If you need help or support, find out more about how our web communication system written specifically for Councils and other special interest groups.
